When we talk about love, it’s not only the four-letter word on our lips. But we must feel it to the bottom of our heart. Love means we are ready to forgive the person whom we have conflict with, despite the fact that we may feel that we haven’t done anything wrong. Love means we give ourself fully to the person/people we love.
This kind of love is not idealist. Even though we don’t call ourself practitioners, and even though we don’t follow the Bodhisattva’s path, we can practice on it in our every-day living. We do so by loving everyone as if they were our only child. There’s no one in our heart that we don’t like. Suppose someone hurts us, we might react negatively at first. But when the wound heals, think of that person with great compassion and try to reconcile with him/her. Think that he or she is not different from us. We all need love and happiness. I used to think that we could stay in equanimity of mind and do not have to pay attention to the people we have problem with. But that attitude is not right because it can be hidden pain that can develop into aversion. So if there is a chance you can forgive anyone, do so. If there is a chance you can love anyone fully, do so. Don’t make the past hurt you. Don’t make conflict become an old thorn that can kill your arm or leg without your being aware of it.
When we do that, we can congratulate ourself for having true love. It’s the highest kind of love that we could love anyone.
